The Metal Insets are a foundational Montessori material designed to refine fine motor skills, enhance concentration, and prepare children for writing. Commonly found in Montessori schools, this material consists of ten geometric shapes, such as a circle, square, triangle, rectangle, pentagon, trapezium, oval, ellipse, curvilinear triangle, and quatrefoil. Each inset is placed into a metal frame. The shapes are paired with corresponding blue frames and pink insets to make them visually appealing.

The Montessori directress presents the Metal insets, demonstrating how to trace the Metal Insets and their frames with a pencil, encouraging precise movements. Children then practice tracing and coloring inside the shapes, gradually developing control of hand movements, pencil grip, and coordination.
